Aqualung is the fourth studio album by the rock band Jethro Tull, released in 1971. It is regarded, despite the band's disagreement, as a concept album featuring a central theme of "the distinction between religion and God". The album's "dour musings on faith and religion" have marked it as "one of the most cerebral albums ever to reach millions of rock listeners". Aqualung's success signalled a turning point in the band's career, which went on to become a major radio and touring act.

Aqualung (Steven Wilson Mix). Yet, Aqualung is arguably Tull’s most misunderstood album. Critics dubbed it a concept album, particularly for Anderson’s critical, skeptical views of organized religion, mostly on side B ( My God ). Anderson has disputed, almost resented, the assessment seeing the record as just a bunch of songs. The labeling lead the band to really give the critics a concept album with the following studio release Thick as a Brick.

The fourth studio album from Jethro Tull. Though regarded by many fans and critics as a concept album, the band rejects this label. The album’s first half is partially inspired by pictures of London homeless, taken by Ian Anderson’s wife. The second half is more philosophical, dealing mainly with Anderson’s views on organized religion. Producers Ian Anderson & Terry Ellis. Writers Ian Anderson & Jennie Anderson. This is the album that introduced me to Jethro Tull and remains my favorite album of all-time. One of the heaviest albums in Tull's repertoire, Martin Barre showcases his guitar on hard rock masterpieces "Hymn 43", "Aqualung" and "Cross-Eyed Mary". The theme of Aqualung is pro-God and anti-organized religion. Listening to "Wind Up' is a stunning listening experience! There is not a bad track on the entire LP. Other great songs include "My God", the classic "Locomotive Breath", the beautiful "Wond'ring Aloud" and the short but sweet "Cheap Day Return". An absolute monster of an album that does not get the recognition it deserves as one of the best records ever released. Again, in my opinion, it is the number 1 LP of all-time. Ian Anderson and his mates came up huge on this one. Essential!!

In the early 80's, I was into Dire Straits, Dylan, Van Morrison and the likes, and I couldn't really see that things could get any better than that, and didn't feel anything missing. One day I read a review of this album by a reviewer whose taste i trusted, saying that this more than decade old album was a favorite of his, and that everyone not familiar with Jethro Tull should have a listen.I did, and it blew me away so hard that it was the only thing I listened to for weeks! This was in the early winter of '84, snow was falling outside, and I had nothing to do but sit and take in the fantastic tales from this gallery of people which inhabited the magnificent world that was Jethro Tull's Aqualung. I was mesmerized! And I still get the same feeling today.I think it is the combination of the oddball stories with both wit and depth, and the very special music which sounds like nothing else, before or after, that makes for a movie-like experience! Try this album if you haven't: It is a masterpiece among masterpieces!

An album full of surprises!! Its heavier rthan anything gone before and its electric and its one hell of an album...It has it all and more,,Andersons distinctive vocals and flute, Barres searing guitars, a touch of folk , a touch of Heavy Metal and a bit of classical all blended into an album of material that is performed as well as it is written...CROSS EYED MARY, AQUALUNG and LOCOMOTIVE BREATH are the 3 standouts on an album where every track is a contender for standout status...Regarded by many as their finest album ..its stood the test of time and still today is a hugely revered piece of progressive rock of very high standing!!

Aqualung is a true masterpiece, and in my opinion the group's finest hour. After demonstrating an extreme gift for melodies on Stand Up and a moderate aptitude for progressive rock on Benefit, the band was able to marshal all of its strengths and exercise everything they'd learned over the course of their short career in order to produce a truly timeless effort, an example of prog rock at its finest. Aqualung proves that the complexity and dark atmosphere of Benefit needn't compromise the sheer catchiness of Stand Up, resulting in a product that showcases Jethro Tull at their very best.

Jethro Tull in a nutshell. The highly adventurous spirit of Thick As A Brick or Minstrel In The Gallery is not omnipresent yet, which results in what might seem as a rather accessible record as a whole. Besides Locomotive Breath, whose genericness makes it stand out in a negative way, there really isn't much to complain about. 40+ years later, My God and Wind Up are still eye-watering.

What else can anyone say about this masterpiece? Prog Rock on Jethro Tull style with lots of crazy and Folky things going on, Anderson creating an intelligent approach to God against religion, epic riffs that build Rock History, a record full of anthems that will be influencial to many bands that will come later... Aqualung it's more than music, it's a phenomenon. And the album that made the band famous around the world.
