On violin in all the works except K. 364, where he plays viola, Mintz is resonant and warm, but always clear, and his expressive lines are always tastefully controlled. Hagai Shaham, as violinist in the Sinfonia Concertante, provides a contrast in his bright tone and scintillating embellishments that works well with Mintz's richer sonorities. Note especially their affecting duo in the Andante of that work, perhaps the most rewarding music-making of the set. Avie's sound quality is splendid. Track Listing - Disc 1.

In the central Andante of the Sinfonia Concertante with the soulful Yuri Bashmet, Spivakov proves he is not only the best of the post-Oistrakh Soviet violinists, but also one of the most moving violinists of the past 30 years. In these recordings from the late '70s and early '80s of Mozart's violin concertos and Sinfonia Concertante with the English Chamber Orchestra and violist Yuri Bashmet, Spivakov plays and conducts with graceful artistry, consummate virtuosity, and deep humanity. In opening Allegros, Spivakov is airborne in the zephyrs of spring.

Mozart: Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola & Orchestra in E flat major, K364. In the Sinfonia – one of Mozart’s first masterpieces, written in 1779, on the threshold of his entrance into the pantheon of genius – soloists, orchestra and conductor emphasise the majestic, symphonic dimensions of the opening movement, and they duet rapturously like operatic lovers in the sublime Andante.
